What is a Blog Carnival?

by Brian on January 27, 2010

Diversifying your linking strategy is the best way to ensure you’re building a constant stream of new inbound links.

One way to generate inbound links to your blog is to participate in Blog Carnivals.

Carnival

No, this doesn’t have anything to do with carnival rides or circus acts. You don’t even have to leave your house to participate in a Blog Carnival.

Blog Carnivals are typically based upon a weekly or monthly theme.
Participating bloggers all write a blog post on that theme and post them on the same day. The host of the Blog Carnival (a fellow blogger) posts the links to all of the blogs on their blog.

You will be required to include some code in your blog post discussing the Blog Carnival and, with many Blog Carnivals, you’ll also need to include links to all of the other participating blogs. So, if there are 20 bloggers participating in the Blog Carnival, you could get 20 inbound links!

It’s a great strategy for getting a lot of quality, relevant links to your blog. Not to mention extra traffic on the days you participate in a Blog Carnival. And, you get content for your blog that you may not have thought about writing if it weren’t for the Blog Carnival’s theme.

You can see an example of how Blog Carnivals work by looking at Chrystal’s “Happy Mothering” blog. Click here to see a blog post that was part of a Natural Parenting Blog Carnival.

You’ll notice that at the top of the post there is information about the Blog Carnival. And, at the bottom of the post, there is more information about the carnival along with links to the other participating blogs.

All of the participating blogs included this same code. Click here to see information about this particular Blog Carnival to learn more about how they operate.

What has your experience with blog carnivals been?
